If you have a blog and welcome comments, do you laugh at times at the comments that you’re getting? I’m not even talking about spam comments here. No. I’m talking about some of the real genuine comments that kind of need improvement.
I know I do.
It’s interesting to see how some people think that because they’re just writing a simple comment on a blog, they can be very casual about it, putting no effort in it what so ever. Of course they are no “set rules” about how a comment should be, but common sense should be your guide.
I have been shaking my head at times at comments I get. Yes, long enough that I thought I should write a post about it. Actually, I don’t want to emphasis so much on the errors that I see, but more on what you should do when you comment on other blogs.
So here are five simple, yet I think, very important tips that you should keep in mind when you visit a blog and want to leave a comment.
# 1 – Greet the Blogger
When you write a letter, or send an email, you wouldn’t even think to start your message without a proper greeting.
Why should it be different when you post a comment?
When you say hi followed by the name of the blogger or guest blogger, it shows that at least you’ve acknowledge who wrote the post, and that you are really talking to them. The next time you leave a comment on any blog, make sure you say hi or hello followed by the name of the author of the post.
No, it’s not something you HAVE to do, but it’s kind of much better if you do. Politely acknowledging the writer of the post is a simple thing you should get into the habit of doing.
[box type=”note”]If the blog post has no name attached to it, my advice is don’t bother leaving a comment at all. No blog post should be nameless.[/box]
#2 – Address the Blogger with the Correct Name
Now, let me tell you one thing; it might even be better if you just say hello than if you say “hello Jane” when the blogger’s name is not Jane.
That’s when you may think that a typo is no big deal, right? You may feel that saying “Hello Sylvia” is good enough when you comment on my blog. But while it’s nothing to you, it’s not nothing to me, and it shows me that you’ve not even been here long enough to notice that my name is NOT Sylvia.
I mean I haven’t seen that happen once or twice. I see this happen on a regular basis. Now, that really makes me wonder. I mean if I had to hire you for a job, and you misspell my name like that, you wouldn’t be hired. See what I mean?
The truth is that it’s border line rude when you make a mistakes like these. By any mean, if you want to be welcome as a new commenter on a blog, the least you could do is make sure your get the name right.
When the blog owner realize that you weren’t even able to write their name right, you’re not sending a very good message about you. Let’s say, you’re not giving a very good impression. So a couple more minutes and make sure you get to know the blogger’s name.
# 3 – First Time Visitor?
When you visit a blog for the first time, it’s appropriate to mention it in your comment. You could start your comment like, “Hi Joe, it’s my first time here and I found you fill the bank… Then write your comment about their particular post.
For example, two days ago I found an incredible good blog post by browsing specific keywords for ideas for my France Travel and Food blog, and I said, “hi (name) I found you while browsing the web for ideas for my own blog. I happen to be French and I have to say that your post is right on target.”
Don’t you think that’s much better than just directly talking about the post without any introduction at all?
Now, why does it matter so much, you might say?
Well, it does matter because blogging and online business are all about building relationships, and if you write a first comment on a blog that’s very impersonal, it’s not the best way to build a relationship with the blogger, is it?
On top of this, if you are personal and sound like a real person, you will stand out amongst all those who are not, and the owner of the blog will know instantly that you’re a genuine commenter and not a spammer.
People in general have a tendency to respond well to people who are more genuine and not afraid to show the human side of them. Telling the blogger how you find them is a very good ice breaker, and you can’t go wrong with that.
# 4 – Scanners Beware
If you have the bad habit of just scanning blog posts, rather than really reading them, beware of not leaving a comment that’s really beside the point.
At times, I can tell a scanner just by reading their comment and how they really didn’t get the point of my post.
While some posts may be easy to scan, some are not. I’m saying this because I think of my personal development blog, for example. My posts there are simply not “scannable,”because the topics are so deep that unless you read the whole thing, you won’t be able to fully grasp what I’m saying.
This is to show you how at times, if you want to comment and all you’ve done is scan through the post, you might give yourself away in your comment. Something to think about, don’t you think?
Don’t give a bad impression of yourself by giving a comment that’s beside the point. Remember that the more you read the post the better your comment will be. So, reading the post in the first place already set the stage for the quality of your comment.
# 5 – Did you Spell Check?
My experience with comments on my blogs is that some people don’t even bother spell checking their comments at all. At times, everything goes. Small to huge errors and misspells in a two small paragraph comments.
Really? And you thought that this was acceptable?
When you butcher a comment with tons of misspellings in it, what does that tell about you as a blogger? If you’re not able to write a decent comment of 2 or 3 paragraphs, what do your blog posts look like? Do you think I would be compelled to go visit your blog?
The point is that your comments do tell about you. Did you pay attention to the name of the blogger? Did you just scan the post? And can you even spell check yourself? All of that can show up in a simple comment and tell much about you.
Give yourself a favor and spell check your comment before you hit the submit button. You can’t correct a comment once you did, so do it first, and you’ll be happy you did.
We all make mistakes. At times when I edit my comments I see crazy errors I can’t believe I’ve made. Well, if I didn’t spell check they would be there for everyone to see.
At time I see some errors that are so bad that I go in and correct them, but at times I also leave your comment as is, so your choice.
Conclusion
So here you have it. 5 easy basic rules for you to remember the next time you comment on a blog post. If you follow those very simple common sense tips, it will be for your own benefits. Now, see if you can remember them as you leave your comment down below.

Speaking of spelling mistakes, most of those come from spammers. Yes, a few times those do come from people for whom English is third or fourth language. However, spammers are the main reason why you get too many spelling mistakes are too many grammatical errors in a short comment.
Well, even I have made a few typos in people’s names or even some spelling mistakes. But, I do reach out to the blogger post realization and ask them to fix it for me. It helps.
You have shared some great tips for new bloggers and it will definitely help them become better at relationship building and also is receiving comments on their own sites because “what you sow so shall you receive”.

Yes, spammers sure make a lot of errors, but those I never published so that’s OK, but here I was talking about people who are not spammers. Yes, a lot of times English is not their first language for sure, but there are also people who just don’t edit their comments at all.
When we comment we want to give the best impression we can, so we can build those relationships, indeed!

I love your advice about not leaving a comment on a blog post that is nameless – this is great! I also never leave a comment on a site where there is no way to contact the owner, no contact page, no email, etc. Gotta wonder if something shady is going on, ya know what I mean? lol
I definitely agree with you on the point of getting the name correct, and I go so far as to decrease my respect for the site owner if they don’t take the time to correct misspellings and bad grammar… (agree with you totally on this point also!)
If they just throw content up and don’t proof-read it, well, then I don’t feel “valued” – don’t know if I’m picky or not, but I run my content through a spell checker to make sure. I check it, double check and triple check.
Do I ever make mistakes? Yes, but not without having used several filters first where I demonstrate that I truly value my readers. I make more allowances for folks that speak/write English as their second language, but this still can be a priority if they choose to use the tools available to us all.

When people misspell you name, and it can happen to all of us, at least if we read our comment again a time or two we can notice that and fix it.
One day I called Adrienen, Harleena, but I did realize it and contact her right away to apologize and ask her to fix my error. Those mistakes I’m talking about are never noticed by those making them, and that’s the sad part.

I have to admit that when you include the bloggers name then you’re being more personable in your comment and I really don’t like the ones that don’t include my name at all. Now when they misspell my name, that kind of irks me too because it’s not like I don’t have my name all over my blog where you can see it. You just can’t miss it so there is no excuse.
I don’t always let a blogger know that I’m new and it’s my first visit because trust me, they should know if they’re responding to comments regularly. I mean I know if you’ve been to my blog before or not. Okay, maybe that’s just me but some times I do this while others not so much.
There was one post I did last year that I got a LOT of comments on BUT the majority of those comments you could tell they scanned that post. The reason was because they were giving me advice on what they thought my post was about because of the headline yet they didn’t read it to actually see what I was asking of them. I finally started getting so frustrated that I started calling people out on it. I’ll scan at times I admit, we all probably do that but I make sure I know what the heck the post was about before commenting for goodness sakes.
I think this is pretty solid advice and I hope that people will start to listen to this as we continue moving forward in the coming months.

Excellent topics to be aware of when commenting on a blog post. I do have to laugh sometimes too, especially when someone uses the wrong name.
I prefer to say Hi (insert name of author) and yes, if I am going to a new blog, I do introduce myself and sometimes even say where I came from…like “Hi Bill, I just found you on G+ and this article caught my eye…” Something like that so the author knows who I am and where I found their blog. Otherwise it looks like spam.
But the most important point you have mentioned is those “scanners” because we can always pin them out in the comment section. Sometimes the comment is so bad, you just know they read one line of the blog and comment on it. It is not congruent with the post. That’s when I shake my head and have to make the decision to let them in or not.
This is great value Sylviane because comments are very important. Other people read them all the time. When we comment, we are representing ourselves, so it has to be a good one, or nothing at all!

I have to admit, I do scan some posts. Depends on the topic. Your post, however was very interesting as I don’t give commenting that much thought. I agree about spelling the name right and making sure you address the right person. That hasn’t happened to me yet? Seems like that’s common sense to me, but I guess common sense ain’t common (and that’s a deliberate bad grammar (ain’t) lol.
I never identify myself as a new blogger. I didn’t think it mattered that much. I usually do run spell check. Actually post in Word and check it and then copy it over to the post for spell check, but also in case something happens when I post the comment. Sometimes weird things happen and you lose the post.
Anyway, I agree with you on all of these. I just never gave it that much thought, but now I will. Thanks for making me get a clue about commenting rules.

I agree with all that you have said. But I must say like Barbara I do skim at times. I did a very advance speed reading course many years ago and I am actually pretty good at skimming and still getting the salient points. But of course I read every word of yours 🙂 – true.
Spelling I just responded to a comment to Adrienne on my blog. I had a typo and must have hit the wrong name Thankfully I noticed before I hit reply. It is easy to do but not good to get someone’s name wrong.
I do not always say I am a first time visitor because to be honest sometimes I am not so sure. I was in that Katie Frieling tribe for some time and visited so many blogs I am not always sure.

I do work on getting the name right though – it is amazing how many do not do that. I find it irrating when some blog posts do NOT give an authors name. I also usually do not leave a comment if I only scan a post. I scan first – then read if applicable.

That absolutely is a great post!! I enjoyed reading it and I was nodding my head in agreement with you on every tip you presented here.
Honestly, I do get most, if not all, of these mistakes in the comments that I get on my blog, from the mispelling of my name, to the spelling mistakes in the comment and also to the irrelevance of the comment to the blog post topic. That indeed tells a lot about the commenters.
Sometimes, I get a comment like “Thanks for a great post, I truely got value from it”, Really? Did you even read the post? I think in this case they didn’t even bother to scan it to leave a somehow decent comment.

Not a surprise. I bet any blogger that has comments open have seen all of these and more. I tell ya!
Usually when you see such a stupidly general comment like the one you mentioned here is because, as you said, they haven’t even read a word. It’s a one fit all comment for the link only. I trash those instantly.
As for the misspellings, if they are bad enough I tell them about their misspell in my reply at times. I’m so tried of those at times 🙂 I could just correct them, but I feel that they need to learn from their mistakes.

Your all points are equally so cool and one should follow them to create bit impact with his comments.
Usually two types of commentators are found in blogosphere.
One type is of those who comment just for the sake of commenting and wrongly assume their a few words will make others note their presence.
Yes length of comments does not matter but people do note how much time has given to record his comments it shows his seriousness to participate in after-publish phase of a post.
Second type of commentators stay focused at the contents of the post and do full justice with them and equally point out any mistake if they find there.
Not checking spelling is a huge problem everywhere in blog commenting sections and people again wrongly believe it is the job of moderator to fine-tune the comments. Though actual job of moderator is to edit it for the convenience of other readers and not edit each comment as if he is comment editor.

Normal before moving further with your comment, it is good to greet and or complement the author. Because we truly comment when we find a post comment-able or trying to build a connect with that blogger.
Normally, i don’t say “This is my first time” when i comment on a first time blog but i’ll make sure the comment is valuable as i’ve always had.
I type without any revising because i just want to drop something from my heart. But now, i’ll follow your advice and start revising my comment before hitting the “Submit” button.

It’s OK not to say I’m here for the first time, if it’s not in the “personality” of the commenter. There is no rule that says that this needs to be done, but I found that when I do it, the blogger feels that I’m really trying to connect with them. Also, there’s lots of fish in the sea and I always try to be different if I can, in a good way, of course 🙂
Editing your comment doesn’t mean changing what you first wrote from the heart, but making sure it really sounds the way you intended to, and check for any spelling error.

I have read a lot of stuffs about blog commenting but this is quite unique. I’m sure everyone else will agree with me that you’ve touched very isolated points – few people mention these points in their ‘blog commenting tips” kind of posts.
I have seen so many times my name written like the writers are drunk. The name is almost everywhere on my blog but some commentators still write ‘eustine’, ‘estine’.
One that really amuses me is someone who said “dear admin” lol. That was crazy. I have also received mails with such opening phrase. sincerely, I don’t read them except I’m really free.
I agree when you mentioned that if a the blog post has no name attached, it should not be commented except the article really drives you crazy 😉
Yes, I often spot scanners from the content of their comments. Some suggest things that have already been said in the post. That shows they didn’t even read 1/5 of the article – shame 😉
I know most of these stupid mistakes you have mentioned here are often committed by everyone – including me 😉 However, we have to learn to grow better everyday.

I can only imagine how people write your name. I know that at the beginning I had to make sure I had the letters in the right order. Some people just don’t bother, so the result is what you’re seeing.

Excellent tips! There’s only one thing that irritates me more than a scanner (especially the ones who do little more than copy and paste portions of your article) and that’s someone who uses a comment to self promote. And I’m not talking about just sharing a bit of their expertise – sometimes I get these comments that go on and on and are clearly meant to drive readers back to their site – some will even suggest readers should check out a particular post on their site which they do not need to do because I use CommentLuv. I used to try and trim them down a bit but these days I just delete the bad ones because I don’t want them back anyway.

I believe one time I called you someone else on my blog when you made a comment yourself. That is a big no, no in and of itself when it’s on your own blog! But yes I apologized for that incident, and I’m glad that you told me.
Other than my own mistakes, the one thing I have to chuckle to myself about is when people scan my blog post and shared a comment that had nothing to do with the topic! It was funny but yet irksome at the same time. They were just commenting just to build links back to their own site.

The basic and golden rules one need to note while commenting
Though at the first sight it may not be a great error but indeed these are errors and to be taken care of.
The rules one to three I do very regularly and very religiously LOL
I give and intro to the blogger if I am a new visitor their I say I am here via so and so pages or so and so places like some social sites etc. or if someone suggested via blog or social pages I make it a point to know this to my visiting page author. Addressing the author by name is a good thing but quiet often people make mistake while typing their names, it happened tome several times, and these days I do just copy it and paste that name in the comment box so that there won’t be any embarrassment. Lol
Of course the fourth one is a time consuming one of course some comment boxes have this facility of spell check, I do not bother to check, this in some rare case made me in an embarrassing situation, hey, I made this mistake! I should have little more careful while posting, someone wrote somewhere I read commenting is a conversation like thing so making one or two mistake in it is a tolerable one, but in a later stage I realized that it’s not correct, and one should be very careful while typing the comments, especially the typos. This is quite often seen in the commenting sphere especially social sites like kingged etc, but I appreciate the Admin @ kingged they disavow such comments from the winning comments. This is much appreciated that the commenters will be more careful while commenting!

Another thing I would suggest in a long comment like yours is spacing it up into small paragraphs rather than one big block that’s pretty hard to read 🙂
Even if you see a spell check when you comment on a blog, you can’t trust that’s going to correct everything. There may be many grammar errors that are not corrected with spellcheckers, so beware.
You can always use a Word document to correct your comments and if anything happens when you actually publish the comment and it disappears for some reason, at least you’ll have saved.

Well, first of all, good say to you. I’m happy to read these important fundamentals of blog comments. This is my first time here in your pillar, yet I enjoyed reading your article since it is attention-grabbing and for the reason that I love leaving comments.
For me, we all have different cup of coffee. We are different kind of persons, we have different tastes and so, therefore, I can’t say that all follows these fundamentals. However, following these tips will add something to a comment.
“Scanners Beware” is interesting among all. Good thing yours isn’t the type of post that’s easy to scan.

I’ve found your post while I was skimming through my Facebook feed.
You’ve written a post that looked like it was written especially for me. Yes! I’ve committed almost every mistake you pointed out in this post.
I’ve commented on a post where I didn’t realize the author (because there was no clear mention about the author) and apologized the real author later for my mistake.
Most of the comments I’ve written were grammatical errors. I find a lot of them after I hit the “Submit” button.
Comments are permanent and non-editable. Thus, we must be careful before hitting the “Submit” button.

Well, your topic is interesting and I must say that though I already know what blog commenting is, and how to do it properly, I’ve learned more from here.
As for me, it is quite embarrassing to know that you’ve commented on a blog with either wrong grammar, or misspelled words. Before posting my comments, I first pass it on a spell checker and do some self-editing after that. I do this to avoid writing mistakes.
Greeting the author and addressing his/her name is a kind of respect, while staying on what the discussion is, is a way to avoid spammy comments.
Anyone who leaves comments on the blogs that they have read must know these basic tips on how to give comments in the right way.

I do edit my comments as well for both errors and spelling. There’s always those errors that no spell checker will catch so that’s why it’s a good thing to edit ourselves as well, just like when we write a blog post. I’m glad you’re doing that.

Yes, I did it all. I greet and give the correct name of the author. I also tell the blog owner if this is the first time I visited a blog. It’s a good manners, I think.
I tried to read every article before I comment on it because it gives me new knowledge and new understanding. Yes, I am trying to be better every day 😉
I agree with you, this is not a must but would be better if you use it.

I totally agree with you all your points.Some years back, if I must confess, I use to scan articles, read one or two lines and judge from the title what the post could be about before commenting but now I realize that what so ever I learn from reading a post, it builds my knowledge and increase my thoughts..I most also add, that greeting the blogger or post writer makes your comment more personal and can easily build up a relationship. The truth is that most bloggers prefers their personal comments and not on the contrary.. Thanks for sharing !!

You’ve got that right. While it might be pleasing to our lazy tendencies to scan blog posts, it sure doesn’t help us with added knowledge and it will never help us write our own posts either. If we read, at least 80 percent of what’s on there we will benefits from it that way. Our blog reading is an education and help us improve. We can’t improve by just scanning all the time.

You just make me realize how foolish I was in my previous days?
I used to comment without reading the post. I used to be a scanner. You know when we are beginner then we trust at others. I was told to comment more and more and for saving time I never read any post but after sometime I realized my mistake. It was terrible.
There are many bloggers who don’t read the name correctly and mention any other name. I mean doesn’t it look odd?

Getting back on blogosphere and while scanning through your past posts, this one got my attention 🙂
It’s like you read my mind on some points 😉 Wonderful topic and I’m glad you took time to talk about ’em. I know, some people may have different definitions, but yet no one is really discussing about it.
From what I have seen over the years, I find politeness is kinda fading away online, Sylviane. Even on professional levels, they do ’cause they have to not because they want to. May be, I’m incorrect. But that’s what I’ve realized, mostly in young generations. As you implied, it’s not a must but greeting is much (and much) better indeed.
How many times commenters misspelled my name? 😀 lol… I recall sometimes I edited their comment just to correct my name. I get that mine is not common, but still getting it right is really nice and I always be careful not to misspell someone’s name. Have no memory of mistakenly misspelling a name either. I think that first impression is sending a good vibe. Isn’t it?
Scanners should beware indeed, and I think we can determine if someone really read our post or not through their comments, Sylviane. Most of the time I’ve sent such comments to spam ’cause they were spam and trying too hard to impress. Plus, typos are common among ’em.

You said something very interesting here, spelling someone’s name right sends good vibes from the get go. Well said! Imagine sending a letter to a potential employer or client and spelling their name wrong? That wouldn’t be good for you would it? So that should applies to everyone.
It’s true also that people are become less and less formal and with it at times politeness tends to disappear. I’ve seen that too.

Hi Sylviane,What a great turnaround. There are so many people (including me sometimes) telling us how to write a good blog post and now we have someone telling us how to be a great commenter. Many of your points have been my amongst my pet peeves for years and I hope I’ve worked hard to eliminate the same from my efforts.Certainly of late, I’ve tried treating my own comments as something akin to a short letter, so I address by name at the top and sign myself off at the bottom. As for keeping the bit in the middle relevant… Well I tend to ramble a bit, as indicated here.Another idea (one that I do fall foul of myself) if to use the language of other commenters and certainly of the author, so you can use multi-syllable words if they’re going to be understood and keep them shorter and sweeter when more appropriate.I think you’re going to see more of me around here as it certainly seems there is plenty for me to learn.Regards,Steven Lucas
