He did it so much that I was wondering if I would want to post this or not on my blog, but finally, I decided that I would let Seth’s post as he wished and let it take its course. So, here we go, Seth…

Both apprehensive and equivocal, you attempt the seemingly unascertained and dreadful world of writing. So like an excited little baby covered in the forbidden chocolate ice cream, you pull out the 8th-grade reading level books out of your small and hidden compartment.

Shortly after opening the book & reading only a few sentences, you feel a drop of water trickle down your face shortly before finding yourself bawling in your own guilt, shame, and confoundedness of your lack of knowing.

Do you happen to be one of these people or at least come close to it? Do you find yourself pounding keys day in and day out only to find you just wasted your reader’s time with meaningless content? If you are, you may enjoy this exquisite piece on how to write like an expert.

For Starters, Do you Actively Follow the Right People?

I know Sylviane is both a great writer & writing teacher; hence why I’m on this site in the 1st place. I also know she knows things that can greatly help us with writing effectively, hooking our audience, and making many sales to our websites or local businesses.  So do you use these resources to help yourself write like an expert? In case you don’t, a few notable resources to help you at least idealize the basic concepts and ideals behind writing like an expert are:

I mean, it’s pretty obvious most of you have awesome websites that probably get quite a bit of sales on a monthly basis. I’ve checked some of them out myself, and I do have to say I’m kind of impressed.

But at the same time, I KNOW you can write better and on a more expert level than what you’re writing now. This I know because I’ve grown up and learned from people who know quite a bit about writing, despite my seemingly young age of 21.

People will actually flock to your sites like they just found there new lover if you write at an expert level.  So without further ado, here are some important concepts for understanding how to write at that level.

The Basic Building Blocks to Writing like an Expert

  • Understanding

Understanding who your audience is and the topic you’re writing about are key ingredients. If you don’t know what you’re talking about and you don’t know who you’re writing to, you have no business to write about whatever it is you’re trying to write in the first place.  Do your homework son.

  • Communication

We as writers serve to be an understanding between the topic at hand and the readers.  Does your audience know your topic well, do they sort of understand what you’re talking about, or do you feel that you have to spell out everything to them?

  • Personal Experience

What experience do you have with what you’re talking about? People tend to trust what you’re saying when you write something; making your article more oriented towards the expert level.

  • Balance

You need to effectively weigh between the opposing viewpoints and the positive viewpoints. If your article is one-sided, people will think you’re racist or something and won’t want to read your article.

  • Tact

This pretty much means you can’t be close-minded. Even if you’re 60 years old and you know that you are an incredible writer, sometimes you just have to allow the kids to edit your article a little bit for fitting the magazine it’s going to feature in. This can apply to many other situations.

  • Flexibility

Do you know a lot of stuff? You’ll be one of the ideal people to choose for any challenging assignment if you’re an expert in more than one field of study.

But How do I Apply this to the Online World Today?

So now that you at least understand some of the basic building blocks to writing like an expert, you might be wondering to yourself how you can apply that effectively in the online world today.

There are many ways you can do this, whether it involves making a side income for yourself or just for fun.  Some of the things you’ll need to learn in the process are:

  • Building your Own Website
  • Writing High Quality Content for SEO

Then in case you just want to do it for fun without spending any money in the process, there are a lot of free databases you can use for publishing your own expert level of writing.  Some of these which are mentioned on cloudwards are free places you can use such as:
– Wix, MoonFruit, Webnode, Webs, Weebly, WebStarts, Yola, Jimdo, Web, & Blogger

  2. Are you two becoming an item? Just kidding but glad to have you back again Seth and thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

    I’ve known Sylviane for a short time now and I admit she’s a fabulous writer. She is always sharing such awesome content with us and continues to teach me about writing.

    I think sometimes my definitions of certain things aren’t the same as what other people think. I definitely do not see myself as a good writer although I’ve had successful copywriters tell me otherwise. I guess you could say I remain a work in progress.

    I’m always taking notes and I welcome any tips. I’ll be sure to keep these in mind as well.

    2. Hi Adrienne. When I said you all have awesome websites in that post, I was referring to people like you. I’ve visited your site before & it’s well done for sure. I like the layout of it quite a bit. As for your writing ability, I’m sure you don’t get yourself enough credit. 😉 I know there’s a big difference between writing “pretty good” & then on the expert/master level. HUGE difference really. Just read old books & poems by famous writers like Robert Frost, Anne Frank, E.E. Cummings, & Edgar Allan Poe.

    I am glad you could join by Sylviane’s blog. She is indeed a great writer and there is a lot to learn from her.

    As far as writing goes, I think the best way to improve writing is to be open (flexible), practice writing (just write – don’t plan, don’t think – free write) and learn from others. In blogging, there are many writing tactics that we could use to convince our readers to take action – whether it be sales or subscription. We can only learn those tactics by reading and observing blogs (which is another important thing in writing).

    Another thing I would like to add is that we don’t have to be a great writer to make money from blogging – as long as we are providing something of value – at least to considerable amount of people (which means, we need to have a target audience), we are good to go.

      What you’re saying totally makes sense. Writing as you go without forcing anything and let it improve as your practice is a very good method and a natural one that does work.

    2. I agree with you about sales. I think you’d be amazed at how quickly people would be willing to buy from you if you write with an expert or master type of level. The 1st thing people will think, especially if targeted at older well-thought people, are OMG – this person can write. Then they’ll be much more willing to stay on. This I know because my dad’s done it before to a certain degree (not trying to brag about him). If he was trying to sell a poetic book he wrote or something for say $9.99, I’m sure people would be willing to buy it from him. ➡ http://www.streetarticles.com/love/dear-dream-lover.

  4. Writing like an expert will for sure get you a following.

    The important thing is to flow and not loose the readers attention, while providing value. Staying on topic is critical while delivering what was promised to the reader.

      Yes, not losing the reader’s attention is probably the most challenging part. In order to do this calling to their emotion is what works best. Emotion is a strong, strong button 🙂 But not always easy to to push 🙂

    2. Yeah, :lol:. Staying on topic is highly important. There’s a lot of (I’ll be nice) “not so good writers” that tend to go way the heck off topic. ONLY TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE GETTING ACROSS. We don’t need to know in FULL DETAIL the little details that don’t matter. It’s like the thesis statement. Only talk about what your thesis statement has. (your thesis statement should usually just be 1 sentence. Then if you’re pretty good at writing then 2).

      Then if you’re like a beast at writing, you can pretty much convey the whole message in like 3 sentences. But of course online, you preferably need to have 400+ words & worry about your low audience (the audience that hardly knows anything about your topic). This is another important factor to consider when targeting certain audiences.

  6. Great guest post Sylviane and I would agree with Seth that you are a good writer already.
    I totally agree about knowing your audience – otherwise you are writing for “everyone and no-one” which never works. I also think it is great to write about personal experiences – some of my funniest and most read posts come from when I have had something annoying or funny happen to me in my “online or offline career”.

    Great tips for writing! You hit one of the most important points at the beginning? Who are we following? One of the best ways to become a better writer is to spend time reading. Writing has always come easily to me (both fiction and non) and a big reason for that is because I have been reading a LOT as soon as I learned how to. There is so much to be learned about how to write (and how not to!) by reading.

  8. Hi Seth, good to see you here. I am very big on personal experience. Not only does it lend authority to your writing but if you’re good at incorporating it into your posts like Sylviane is, then you have something much more compelling for someone to read. I think writers of all people know they have to be open to criticism, too! If there’s one thing we do well it’s nod along when someone gives their opinion.

    Your personality is also important, and I think that has to do with experience. if you’re comfortable writing about your topic and get int the groove of doing it, you can inject yourself in ways that will make your writing much more enjoyable.

    I like the point you made about “Personal Experience” everything I write I’ve got experience off. If you write about things you don’t know people will pick up on this and loose trust in what you say. Staying true yourself is what makes people draw towards us I think.

    2. Yeah, unless you’re strictly writing like a review site or something. When you aim for an authority site or something that builds itself over time, you definitely need the “personal experience” aspect of it.

    Absolutely 🙂 I’m impressed with Sylviane’s writing from the first day I get to know her. I still remember how she made a topic that I consider as boring, quite interesting to read. Since then I’m learning from her. That’s why I stop by here always or new ones. I can’t apply all of them in sudden, but I’m taking actions gradually.

    Now over to you mate 🙂 I believe, understanding is really the key. People who do what they say knows what it means. If Sylviane doesn’t follow what she says on her writing, I won’t stop by here. It makes sense, right? Also I didn’t believe adding personal experiences at first. I thought it just a show off. But now I know how much our readers value it. We are writing for humans 😉 Balance is quite a good point too. Some writers just aligned to one side and even at the comment section, for criticisms, they try to impose that their idea is totally right and other views doesn’t matter. It ruins them. I can’t agree more with other factors mate. They are true enough.

    2. haha, wow. that’s a huge comment. Let’s see… Understanding is definitely important. If people don’t understand what you’re talking about, then the point of you creating the site is gone. Personal experience is definitely important too especially if you’re aiming for an authority site, or something you’d want to build over time.

  11. Writing was difficult for me when starting out a few years ago. I remember my first blog post sitting at the computer with a blank stare. What do I say, what if i say something and people won’t find it interesting or worse, think I am not educated enough.

    I was lucky to find an online colleague (because i didn’t know Sylviane at the time!) that had a real knack for writing content that was interesting but also entertaining at the same time. Kept your interest, made you smile and also made you think.

    So Seth I am glad you share these tips today because I know I am not alone when it comes to writing content. But as you point out, it has to be content that makes sense and is interesting and meaningful for the reader.

      I think that writing is like anything else, it could dancing, playing a music instrument, learning a foreign language, swimming, or even math. Some people are better at them than others.

      Some people may not even had do much learning in one area and lots of it in another.

      So, I get it that writing is not the cup of tea of just everyone… however, just like swimming, playing a music instrument or math, it can be learned, and even though that was not your forte, you did learn and today you are publishing content on a regular basis 🙂 Can’t be better than that, can it?

Writing for the internet is not what used to be ten years ago, not even five years ago, because the competition for content writing is insane with billions of articles, new articles, published everyday, it is mandatory that writers learn how to write putting always their very best foot forward and make an impressive first appearance.

      Yes, you are so right. Wow, I wish we were 10 years ago and know what I know that, but not a chance. 10 years ago I had not even a clue that I would be doing what I am doing now.

      There is surely lots of competition out there, that’s why being ourselves is so important.
