5 Top Ways For Writers To Make Big Bucks Online And Offline

5 top ways for writers to make money It’s not a secret that if you love to write, you can find many opportunities to make a very comfortable living, in today’s internet world.

I’ve read recently that in order to make lots of money writing, what you need the most is NOT being an excellent writer in the technical sense, but simply have the love of writing. Your love of writing can take you places you didn’t know you could make a living from.

I know bloggers who are saying that they love to write and others who are saying that they don’t, they just write to pass on information from their blog, but in the end, either way, we are all writers, as long as we put words on the blank screen for others to read and to learn from.

What about you? Are you just a blogger writing to inform and promote your own business or are you someone who is looking for ways to make money writing?

If you are looking for different ways to make money from your writing skills, then this is for you.  In this post I am going to discuss 5 ways you can make big money writing online and offline.

Copywriting

Of all the many ways you can make money writing online, the most lucrative one still, has got to be copywriting.  Why am I saying this? Because copy writing is a $2.5 trillion business, and growing.

Now, do you think that there is money to be made here?  You bet there is.

Granted, not everyone is a good copywriter.  As a matter of fact, surveys are reporting that some business owners are complaining about the shortage of good copywriters out there, but that’s kind of good news for you, because if there is more demand than writers to provide for such demand, it means that with the right training there is an avalanche of opportunities for you.

Copywriting is totally teachable and learnable, and if you are willing to invest a bit of time and money learning, it might pay off big time for you.  If you learn the basic techniques of copywriting and mix it with own personal writing style and touch, you could potentially develop into a great copywriter and make a very comfortable living doing it.

Are there tools and methods available for you to learn about copywriting? Yes, there are, and if you connect with me I can let you know about some of them.

Website Writing

You can make money with website writing in two different ways.

1- Writing for your own niche website

2- Writing for other websites.

Website writing is probably the easiest way you can make money writing online.

Writing for your own niche blog/site

You can create a specific niche site, learn everything there is to learn about it, and write about it weekly, by-weekly or even daily if you want. If you do it well, you could become the go to guy or girl for that specific niche and while linking to products and services (not to mention ads) you can generate a profitable income with your niche site.

Some of such writers report a 50,000 to 100,000+ a year in revenue doing just that.

While doing it, you will also improve your writing skills, help people, learn more and more about the product you love, and work at your own pace.

Will you make money over night? No, but with the right goal in mind, some focus and patience, it could be your very own way to make a very comfortable living writing online.

Writing for other sites

Of course, you can apply the same writing technique for other marketers who are looking for writers to write for them.  You can perfect your knowledge in specific niches, and offer your writing services in such niches.

A good niche writer can make $100+ per article very easily. If you can write 3-5 articles a day, as it’s totally possible for us writers, do the math on how much money you could make?

Your toughest job will be to find the right clients, but when you do, most clients like to stick to the same writers when they find good ones.  So assuming that you’re a pretty good writer and find the ideal clients for you, you could generate a pretty comfortable living writing this way.

Grant Writing

Grant writing can be a very lucrative niche that very few writers are willing to take, because they simply don’t know how to go about it.

So, what does a grant writer do?

A grant writer writes intelligent proposals and try to link the foundation they’re writing for to the right government organization which has the money available and ready to go for it.

A good grant writer will know how to convince such organization to be willing to give some grant money for the foundation they’re writing a grant for.

Now, needless to say that it will take some learning to be able to write great stand out grants, but just like copywriting, it’s something you could learn.

Once you learn the tricks, you’ll be able write attractive grants and find the right government organizations that have the money, but are only waiting to read the best written piece about why they should give it away.

Literally billions of dollars are waiting around to be given for grants, and that’s where your writing skill comes in as a grant writer.

Resume Writing

You might not be aware of this, but resume writing requires the same persuasive features that copywriting, website writing or grant writing do, and this can be an online/offline business for you.

I have a lot of experience myself with resume writing, and I can tell you that if your resume is badly written, badly formatted or simply unattractive, you are seriously reducing your chances of getting the job you’re applying for.

If you are a writer and know how to write resumes that work, that’s when you come in.  Hundreds of thousands of people need persuasive, effective and professionally written resumes.

Many of those people even need two or three different resumes that they can use alternatively depending on the type of job they’re applying for.  The only problem they have is that they don’t know how to write a good resume that works for them, and they need help.

As I said, resume writing is one of my specialties, and I have to say that people in general have resumes that are pretty darn bad.  There’s just no way those people would be able to get a good job with their resume unless they fix it or totally rewrite it.

A well written resume and a badly written one can be the difference between getting that great job you want and not getting it.  Badly written resumes are tossed away before your potential employer even get the chance to look at it.

People who are conscious of this fact, but can’t write a well put together resume, will be willing to pay a good resume writer to do it for them.  The fee you can charge for a good resume is about the same as for a good article.  It’s your business and you make the shot.

Travel Writing

If there is a dream job, and if you like to travel, then it’s got to be travel writing.

As a writer you already know that pushing the emotional buttons of the reader is your goal, and that’s what you have to do even more so when you are a travel writer. You need to help the reader connect emotionally with the place you’re writing about.

As a travel writer, you need to pay close attention to everything you see, eat, smell, feel and experience. You need to ask questions, find out more about known and not so well-known facts from the places you’re visiting, and be willing to spend some time in non-touristic areas as well.

As in the case of all areas of writing, you need to develop your own specific tricks and skills to differentiate yourself with other writers by making your writing the most attractive and compelling one. Your love for what you see and feel should be felt in your writing. That’s what will make you an excellent travel writer.

All in all, travel writers can have a blast and live a very exciting life, spending few hours writing and many more hours enjoying life in the most beautiful parts of this world.

Travel writers can write for both online sites and offline magazines. Sky is the limit.

If you are a freelance writer, and still wondering how you could make good money writing, pick one of those and investigate it fully, and you’ll be able to see if this is for you or not.  If not, continue your search as there are a few more ways you could make money using your writing skills out there.

  1. Hey Sylviane,

Thanks for sharing this! I got to agree more with copywriting. Being a good copywriter, you can easily earn thousands a month. For starters, you could easily do a couple of hundreds monthly!

I heard about the rest before but yet to really try. Maybe just not my type of niche! However, great lists you have there and going to share this around!

    1. Hi Reginald and nice to see you here again.

Yes, copywriting can pay big time and I’m glad that you seem to known all about that.

I’m OK, but this has been a very tough year for me emotionally. Just trying to make the best of it and move forward as best as I can. Thanks for asking and for coming.

  2. Hi Sylviane,

    Informative post indeed 🙂

Yes, being a writer I can relate to these ways to make money online, just by writing having tried them all. Grant writing was something new I learnt rather recently, and it takes a while to get a grasp of it, and even travel writing was fun, though that was based on my own travel experiences.

Other than that, the usual writing for clients that we do based on their requirements and the blog writing for our own blog or anyone else’s are very common ones that can bring you good money, provided you strike a good deal.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

    1. Hi Harleena,

I’ve never tried grant writing, because it’s a very specific niche and really needs to be learned well to pay off, but given the time to do so, it might be a rewarding niche as grant writers are fewer than any other writers I think.

Thanks for bringing your writer’s insights and have a great day!

  3. Hey Sylviane,

Funny enough when I started out online, I wanted to be a Copywriter. I studied like crazy and wanted to be one of the greats like Gary Halbert, Brian Keith Voiles, and so many more. But I never actually went through with it … in terms of getting clients, etc.

I try to write for myself instead because I feel as though I can make more money that way when I sell my own products.

But copywriting is a good thing, you just have to be willing to put in the work.

    1. Hi Andrew,

Well, I didn’t know that about you.

I think that if there is a will there is a way to put in the time and efforts to become a very good writer with the aim to make money writing for hire. In today’s internet this is more possible than ever.

  4. Hi Sylviane,

Nice post. I had no idea about the different way of writing that could earn you money. I knew about blogs and even copywriting. Never thought about copywriting as that is one more thing to learn. 🙂 I, have not written other resumes, but have reviewed for many people and given feedback.

I see there are different ways to do so and I find that very interesting. Something to think about since I’m a technical writer as well.

Great info for those of us who want to earn more money writing.

    Thanks for writing this post.

    1. Hi Barbara,

Yes, there are certainly more than one or two ways to make money writing, for sure, there are even enough for another post later on of yet some other forms of writing to make money.

Believe it or not, I’ve been wanting to be a travel writer for a long time, and with some changes that are happening into my life right now, that’s something I’m considering doing at least for a while maybe.

Thank you for coming by. Nice to see you 🙂

  5. Hi Sylviane,

There is plenty of money to be made as a writer. I know a copy writer and she makes so much money it’s crazy! One of my old off line clients was a grant writer. She was a single mom with two kids, owned her own large home and was self supporting. Boy was she wracking in the bucks!

Where there’s a will there’s a way! There are many different types of writing and one can make a darn good living doing so. Before I met David he was supporting his family for 15 years as a freelance writer. He had the benefit of being home and watching his children grow up.

So yes, writers can make a good living! They just have to choose which kind of writing they enjoy.

    1. Hi Donna,

Yes, when it comes to writers you have two kinds. The ones that do make big buck and the ones that barely go by, but as you and me know success has so much to do with mindset.

Right now, while I’m still heavily grieving, I’m also aware that I am at a huge turn in my life and as I was mentioning in my reply to Barbara, I’m considering to try my skills at travel writing. In 7 months from now, my apartment lease will be up, and all I need to do is pack my stuff into a storage and GO. I am seriously considering doing that, and I could even start before that as well.

      The possibilities are great.

      Thank you for coming, Donna.

  6. Hi Sylviane,

Wow, I had no idea there was money to be made in copywriting! I don’t know about writing for other webistes….I’ve done some guest posts here and there but for sites like eZine I think I still have a way to go before I go there.

I actually dabble in resume writing as an offline venture but I don’t push it much. I have done gotten some referrals and I’ve placed a button on my site if anyone could use my services as well.

Thank you for sharing these tips with us today. I’m definitely going to pass this along!

I hope you’re doing well. Have a great evening!

  8. Ciao, Sylviane,

Excellent article on ways to make big bucks in writing. Yes, I see a lot of people making large amounts of money as copywriters and freelance writers. If they manage their time and productivity well, it can even be more lucrative.

Good copywriters are expensive to hire these days, and for good reason. The results they get the client are astounding sometimes. I’ve seen comparisons on conversions for product launches when a beginner wrote the copy and when a professional copywriter wrote it, and it’s quite amazing.

I had never heard of grant writing before, so learned something new! 🙂

I have a friend who just started college that I’ll be sharing this with, as well as the rest of my friends. You’ve provided a ton of value here, so thanks for sharing!

Have a good evening. Talk to you soon.

  9. Hey Sylviane,

I haven’t realized that there are so many ways to make money through writing. I figured just writing a book or for a magazine were lucrative ways of making money.

Now when you said that you can make money writing resumes, now that’s right up my alley! I got my experience from writing and submitting resumes when I was looking for a job some 12 years ago. I wrote so many resumes, making adjustments and changes, that I just kept improving. Now i find out that it’s another way to make cash! I couldn’t help myself but to smile LOL

  14. Hi,

The most lucrative one for me was the grant writer. If the deal is made, then the profits will be very awesome.

For me, I write to build my presence as a writer, to grow and learn along the way. Imparting knowledge is my minimal focus, entertaining and amusing people with my writing is my ultimate goal.

My sister was tricked to pay nice amount of money for her resume to be written by professionals. Unfortunately they were scam guys and since my sister was innocent, she lost her money.

Website writing is the thing I do now, copywriting is something not for me now. I guess learning it will do the trick, like you said. Such a big business, I am surprised. The true way to earn money is to be good enough.

Travel writing, I guess that’s what Ryan Biddulph does the best. Doing the same for the magazine would be cool as all the expenses would be taken care of.

Some new terms for me today. Awesome list for anyone to start focusing and really work for it, so they can earn money.

Loved the article. Have a great weekend. 🙂

Wow, I didn’t know that you could write grants. Kudos to you on that.

I’ve never written grants, but I know that with the right training any writer can become good at this type of writing too.

Next year I’ll be traveling, so even though I am good at travel writing it will become even better.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  15. Hi Sylviane!

You have an interesting round up of ways that freelance writers use make big buck on and offline. I haven’t heard about Grant Writing, so my eyes were attracted and interestingly found out that billions of dollars are waiting around to be given for grants. WOW!

Moreover, resume writing caught me off guard. I thought it is going to be easy to try this; however, you need to have skills in writing that could persuade readers. Doing so, you’ll or they will get the job you/they are wishing for if you/they use this and make money from it.

  16. Hi Sylviane

All the five ways are very practical to earn big bucks both online and offline.
I worked as grant writer for sometime. For this purpose one must be quite familiar with project development and must have art of explaining what he plans to do with the funding money. You are right it is quite lucrative way of content writing.

In freelancing the initial years are quite challenging. I still remember what was my first reaction when ten years ago what I was offer to write a 500 words post. I was about to go mad to hear a meagre amount as reward of my labor.

Thanks a lot for sharing this wonderful and equally a lucrative post.

  17. While it is gratifying to read an article based on writing as lucrative moneymaker, I find myself even more frustrated! More than most things, I want to work solely as a freelance writer. I am a college graduate with a BA in journalism & media studies. I know this may mean little in the long run. A degree doesn’t ensure talent, and one can certainly become successful WITH natural talent and no degree. I hope I’m speaking the truth when I say that I have both. YET… I’ve had no success.

Perhaps it’s the fact that I have listened to much of some version of “But it’s so HARD to make it as a writer,” thereby shooting myself in the foot by allowing that negativity to ooze into my own consciousness and attitude. I am an adult who returned to college after many years – I think as much to say I finally accomplished that large life goal as to “be a better writer.” I believed I already had natural talent, but I’m sure that whatever skills I may or may not have gone in with were more sharply forged in that academic fire, per se.

It’s not to say that I haven’t had one freelance opportunity. I have. I wasn’t back in school for too long before I began writing for small local newspapers. I began two internships, both of which resulted in job offers. Sadly, only one of those offers resulted in my ever being paid for my work. The other magazine site is now down altogether, and the bigger frustration (even over all the money I’m owed) is the fact that I have no link to the site where I have been most prolifically published. My word that I have had so many articles published over such a broad range of topics means little to potential freelance employers or too freelance job boards asking me for links to published work.

And this has turned into a sob story! The direction in which I meant to go when I began this response to this article: where should I go… where should I be looking for legitimate copy writing opportunities? One of my other “dream job” goals is to someday be a travel writer. I’m assuming that this is a goal I will only reach after having been regularly published in other areas, building the means to travel more on my own – at least at first – so that I can pitch ideas that publishers will actually take seriously.

    Advice?

  18. Hi Sylviane,

I’m super partial to travel writing. What else would a guy living in Fiji say, right? 😉

Seeing the world, experiencing the world, and sharing my experiences – by linking my travels into running a successful blog – is the way to live for me. I like travel writing because it forces you to relay your experience in as much detail as possible, to inspire your readers to stay glued to your RSS feed.

    i love it.

So much fun to talk about being freaked out in Fiji, or incapacitated in India….and hey, since my latest/new eBook covers how my wildest travel stories help you become a successful blogger i feel this is another neat way to monetize your writing skills; through eBook writing.

I’ve 3 down, plus a combo, and am writing #4 as we speak, meaning I’ll have 5 products in about a week or so, ready to go, and I already have 2 more eBooks lined up and I’m about ready to start on them soon.

Writing eBooks is a wonderful way for any writer to establish their authority and of course, to make money.

    Thanks so much Sylviane.

That always seemed particularly difficult and niche but if you’re a writer then why not? I’m sure it’s a skill you can learn just as easily.

I wish more people would hire writers! Unfortunately since everyone has a pen and everyone has a keyboard, everyone also figures they can write. But sometimes it’s a good idea to get someone with an outside perspective and a focus on writing. Even for me sometimes I know it can be hard to write my own stuff. Like when I want to write my website copy, I get stuck in my head and it’s really helpful to have someone else look at it.

    1. Hi Carolyn,

Wow, it’s really a surprise to see you here. As a matter of fact, I haven’t seen you anywhere lately, but I’ve thought about you, though 🙂 This year has been the year from hell for me, and I’m still mourning, but I plan on making some drastic changes in my life next year, and I’ll be blogging about it soon.

It sure makes me feel good that you’re saying that I’ve put a lot of info in this post, because someone on Linkedin (a writer) told me that my article was useless. I tell ya, Linkedin is a whole different type of social media and if you post you stuff there, you’ve got to be prepared on being attacked sometimes.

I replied to her that the post was meant to give a list FIRST and then I will get more into details about ways to specialize in those different writing types, and by the same token I also told her that she was mean. She later apologized.

Indeed, lots of people won’t spend the money hiring a writer, and that’s understandable, but on the other hand many companies are, everyday.

Thank you so much for coming by and I hope you’re doing well.

  20. Hey Sylviane,

It’s been a while since I have stopped by (I was on a break). And it seems that I have stopped by just at the right time.

I am looking into freelance writing. Up until now, I wasn’t really interested in making money through writing (I was trying to do it through my blog…well, that didn’t work out). So, I thought, why not try writing?

I have been mostly looking into writing for other blogs; paid guest posting opportunities. I have found a few sites, and I still figuring things out (First, I have to create a solid resume; I do have one, but I need to modify it to highlight my writing skills and experience).

I have heard of copy writing, but haven’t looked into that; need to do some research about it (Although I am not keen on investing time into learning something new; my time is limited as it is; I am better off sticking with things I know, at least until I graduate from college).

Travel writing is writing, although I won’t be able to do that since I am in school; can’t travel around a lot.

Anyways, thank you for the awesome post, Sylviane! Appreciate it 🙂

Excellent post. Not too long ago I learned that you could make money online through SEO content writing, which is writing for internet marketing companies who have clients that need blog posts with specific SEO techniques included. Niche writing has been proven to be lucrative for many people and though it may take some time a dedication, in the long term a niche site can make your life easier. As you get ranked higher, you may not have to work as much, or even higher others to work for you so it become passive income. I will look into the other types of writing, because I do not know about them. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, niche writing is very common and pays well. I think that for a freelance writer it might be easier to find work if you are really specialized in one specific niche type than if you write about many different niches.

I know this is a very late reply, but I’ve had a lot going one that needed to be taken cared of this week, and it’s hard to put blogging in the middle of all of it.

Nice to see you here and thanks for coming.

  22. Hi Sylviane,
Was looking at a video shared by Adrienne and ended up wandering around your site, and found this article about writing for a living…. well sort of!
Writing and copy writing…in my own fashion I can write, will admit to doing a much better job if I plan ahead and make an outline
.I became enamored with Gary Halbert and his tales of how to write copy. Even going so far as to maintain a folder in my email box where i saved endless letters from Jew Fish Creek.
Here is a quote from one of them that keeps rolling around in my head:
“Which brings me to a crucial point: If you are in need of truly world-class copywriting…
You Are Probably Going To Have To Learn To Do It Yourself!”
Then he went on to say what you have said above. writing is a skill and can be learned..just apply yourself.

    1. Hi Cararta,

I don’t think I’ve heard of Gary Halbert, but I’ll look him up.

Indeed, everything has to be learned, and then we should always add our own special touch to it, always trying to make it better.

I’m glad you’ve wonder off over here. Have a great day, dear.

  23. I agree with the words “you should have the love for writing..”. Its true and really the truth. Just being an excellent writer don’t give you much opportunities to flourish but when you love it, you naturally be taken to many places where you can grow more, earn more. The 5 ways for making good bucks out of writing are good enough Sylviane. Keep writing.
